Why change starts with identity, not motivation

becoming the person you want to be

A lot of people try to change their lives by focusing on habits. They set goals, create plans, and try to stay motivated. And for a while, it works. But eventually, they fall back into old patterns and feel like they’re starting over again.

It can feel frustrating. Like you know what to do, but somehow, you’re not doing it consistently.

At some point, I started realizing that maybe the problem isn’t discipline or motivation. Maybe the problem is deeper. Maybe real change doesn’t start with what you do, but with who you believe you are.

Why Change Often Doesn’t Last

A lot of people try to change their lives by focusing on what they do.

They set goals, create plans, and try to stay motivated. And for a while, it works. But eventually, they fall back into old patterns and feel like they’re starting over again.

It can feel frustrating. Like you know what to do, but something isn’t fully connecting. Because often, the focus stays on behavior. But behavior without a deeper foundation rarely lasts.

There is a missing piece, and it’s not more discipline. It’s alignment between your actions and the way you see yourself.

Identity Comes First

There’s a difference between saying:

“I want to work out” and “I am someone who takes care of my body.”

One is a task, the other is a decision.

Once you start seeing yourself in a certain way, your actions begin to align with it naturally. You don’t need to constantly convince yourself. You simply act in a way that matches who you believe you are.

And that shift is subtle, but important, because when something becomes part of your identity, it stops feeling optional. It becomes something you return to, even on days where you don’t feel like it. Not because you are forcing yourself, but because it would feel strange not to.

Over time, these small decisions build a version of you that feels consistent. Not perfect, but reliable. And that is what makes change last.

Choosing Who You Become

For me, this shift didn’t happen overnight. It started with small changes.

I wasn’t feeling good, physically or mentally. My habits around food, sleep, and movement weren’t supporting me, and I could feel the difference.

So I started trying new things. Cooking differently. Working out more: sometimes at the gym, sometimes at home.

And what surprised me most was how I felt afterwards. Clearer, more energized, more in control, and overall just better.

That feeling made me realize something: This is the version of myself I want to become. Not because of how it looks from the outside, but because of how it feels.

When It Gets Difficult

There is also a part of this that isn’t talked about enough. What happens when things are not going well.

I had a moment where I was going through something personal, and it affected everything. There were days where I didn’t feel like doing anything. Not getting out of bed, not working out, not even small things like my usual routine or brushing my teeth.

And I remember thinking I could just let everything go. But I also realized something important. If I let everything go, it wouldn’t just stay emotional, it would become physical too. It would also add onto the mental load, and everything would feel heavier.

If I kept even a few things, like eating well, moving my body, and taking care of myself, then at least I had something stable. Something that reminded me of who I am, even when I didn’t fully feel like it. And sometimes, that’s enough. For me it was enough to keep up my routine.

Final Thoughts

Becoming the person you want to be is not about doing everything perfectly.

It’s about deciding who you are, and then showing up in alignment with that, even on difficult days.

Your habits are not just things you do, they are reflections of who you are becoming.

You don’t build a different life first – you become a different person, and your life follows.

In the next article, I’ll explore what a real glow up looks like – both internally and externally, and how the way you see yourself shapes both.
